History of reiki

When people become aware of reiki, they often wonder what is the history of reiki and how did it come about. Was it always there? Was it invented or discovered and how long has it been around.  I’m about to answer as many questions as I can about the history of reiki!

The history of reiki dates back to 1800s. It was rediscovered. Rather than it being discovered, popular thought is that it was never lost, it was always there so it was rediscovered rather than being invented, found or being something new!

So rather than giving a date for the history of reiki we can say it was re-discovered by a buddhist monk called Dr. Mikao Usui. Popular believe is that Dr. Mikao Usui was teaching students when one asked about how Jesus healed. Usui could not answer this question and set about finding out the answer to this rather puzzling question.

Dr Mikao Usui’s Journey

Dr Usui began his travels which eventually led him to Holy Mountains of Kori Yama. Here he believed he would find the answer to the questions that troubled him so much.  In order to reach a higher state he undertook a fast and meditation for 21 days.  It is said that Dr Usui was beginning to  become fustrated as nothing had happened to enlighten him! On the 21st and just as he was about  to give up a great energy struck him on the top of the head and he became enlightened. The history of reiki says that he also got Reiki Ryoho, which is the power and ability to heal.

Dr. Usui then decided to help the beggars in the slums of Kyoto, believing he could heal them and help them live a better life. Having spent 7 years healing those in the slums, he noticed something peculiar. He had many “regulars” who kept coming back.   Being curious he asked them why the had not started out a fresh.  The answer he received that it was much better doing what they knew rather than starting out on a new path. Although shocked and surprised Dr Usui become enlightened and learned a very interesting fact.

Importance of reiki healing

Two important facts were learned by Dr Usui.  The physical had to be healed but also more importantly the spiritual needed healing.   The second important fact that became important in the history of reiki is that the person coming for the healing had to want to be healed, and make changes in their life.  From this Dr Usui created the reiki principles.
