This article will give you a brief introduction to what Chakras are and how they relate to Reiki and holistic healing in general.
What are Chakras?
The term Chakras comes from a Sanskrit word that means wheels or discs. It is said that there are 7 Chakras in the body that relate to energy within us. If this Chakras are not aligned correctly we get dis-ease. Each Chakra works on both a physical and spiritual level.
The 7 main Chakras are:
Head Chakra – often referred to as the Crown Chakra – this chakra on a physical level looks after the spinal column, brain and the nerves. From a spiritual level this root chakra puts us in direct contact with the source.
Third eye chakra – this chakra is situated in the forehead. On a physical level it deals with the the nervous system, eyes, head and pituitary glands. Therefore if someone comes to my complaining of problems with their eyes I may focus more time on this chakra. From a spiritual point of view this chakra is concerned with knowledge, and intuition. Thus developing or paying attention to this chakra can help you increase your intuition. Remember those times you just go a hunch?
Throat Chakra- this is located in the throat area. From a physical stand point this chakra controls the thyroid, throat, mouth, tongue, jaw and teeth. Therefore anyone who may have an under active or over active thyroid may need more attention here. On a spiritual level this chakra looks after the areas of truthfulness, and communication, amongst others. If a person is afraid to speak their mind or has communication issues, this area often needs more reiki healing.
Heart Chakra – this chakra is located around the heart area of the body. Physically it controls the heart and lungs and circulation. It’s an important chakra for physical well being. On a spiritual level it deals with our emotions and feelings and how we act with others. Thus is a person has communication issues I might focus on this chakra and the throat chakra as this may help them express their feelings more.
Solar plexus chakra: This chakra on a physical level controls the upper part of our intestines and and also the upper back and spine. Any pains in the back, in the stomach and spine can be treated by applying reiki to this chakra. On a spritutal level this chakra controls our will power, and our personal power. Sometimes we have a knot in our stomach and can’t seem to go on and progress. Reiki to this chakra can alleviate this and make us feel better and more powerful.
Hara chakra – The location of this chakra is just below the navel. On a physical level it is in charge of the sexual organs, your bladder, bowel and lower intestines. Any sexual issues could be resolved here. On a spiritual level this chakra controls sexual needs, passion and desires.
Root Chakra : This particular chakra is located at the bottom or base of the spine. On the physical level the root chakra controls the areas of the back, legs, feet, hips, spine and also the circulation of blood. It is a very important chakra in reiki. On the spiritual level the root chakra is in charge of our energy levels, what we strive for and most importantly the connection we have to the earth. Ever heard of the expression that someone is very grounded!
